Lizzie Doron has fought her whole life – for a homeland free from persecution, for peace with her Palestinian neighbours, for freedom and democracy. Then came 7 October. While sirens wailed in Tel Aviv, the Israeli government waged a war that killed even more people and brought none back.
More than a year and a half has passed since then. The horror of the war months was followed by a fragile ceasefire. Is there still a future to believe in today? In a time of missing answers, Lizzie Doron writes about her everyday life, which does not exist and yet continues: encounters with bereaved families, absurdly comical scenes with her grandchildren in the air-raid shelter, political discussions at the hairdresser’s, memorial events that are becoming stale, silence on the phone with her Palestinian friend.
