“Austria, 1867–1955” links the political history of Vienna and the German-speaking countries of the Habsburg Empire before 1914 with the history of the Republic of Austria since 1918. It depicts modern Austria as a fascinating example of democratic state formation.
The establishment of the Austrian nation began in 1867 under the aegis of the Habsburgs. Although the First World War brought about the collapse of the empire, it paved the way for democratic self-government, which found expression in the constitution of 1920. The failure of democratic nation building led to annexation by the Nazi regime in 1938. After 1945, under Allied supervision, the heirs of the 1918 revolution created an ideologically influenced political system, which in the 1960s gave rise to a stable republican culture of power sharing between Catholics and Socialists.
