Jaffna, 1981. Sashi is sixteen and wants to become a doctor like her grandfather. And like K, a boy from the neighbourhood with whom she has a special friendship. But her life takes a different turn when civil war breaks out in Sri Lanka and Sashi has to watch as her family is caught up in the maelstrom of violence. Two of her brothers and K join the Tamil Tigers – with devastating consequences. Sashi fights for justice in her own way until, in the end, her only option is to flee. But in New York, she realises that she cannot escape her past.
